SUMMARY:Shady Speakers
DESCRIPTION:Hampton Art Lovers presents the Shady Speaker Series in partnership with GeoAg. This series is a part of the “Under a Simple Tree: The Canopy Policy Project” featuring the Art of Brandon Clarke Presented in Partnership with Green Space Miami. Hosted by Richard Campbell of the Geological Agriculture (GeoAg) Institute. \n  \nThe Shady Speaker Series highlights the growing trends for African Americans to reclaim our agrarian roots and promote conservation efforts. It’s time to talk trees\, Miami\, and urban agriculture. While Miami is literally heating up these past few days\, have you ever wondered why there’s a lack of Shade in African-American communities and working-class communities in general? But we need trees to beautify\, for public health\, and community gatherings. This is a problem that we can solve on our own. What does it cost to simply drop a seed and plant a tree\, pennies? \n  \nGeoAg is the study of growing plants in rocks. THE Shady Speaker series highlights innovative methods to grow and sustain vegetables\, fruits\, and flowering plants with limited to no use of soil and fertilizers. The use of gravel in the cultivation of crops may represent the most resource-efficient method of growing crops ever to exist\, especially in the concrete jungle where working-class communities are dominated by asphalt and little to no tree canopy. \n  \nGuest Panelists: \nChristopher Norwood – Historic Hampton House \nJumaane N’Namdi – N’Namdi Contemporary Gallery

SUMMARY:Florida's Emancipation Day – A Juneteenth Experience
DESCRIPTION:The annual Juneteenth Experience on May 20th\, Florida’s Emancipation Day. This evening is a celebration of Black history\, Black music\, freedom\, and joy and will include a hybrid panel and performance. The panel topic will center distinct voices from across the Black diaspora\, highlighting the importance of maintaining a lens of intersectionality as we explore and celebrate Juneteenth. \n  \nHued Songs produces performances across South Florida that amplify Black joy\, Black creativity\, and Black Belonging. Through song\, spoken word\, dance\, and multimedia\, our work is rooted across three core principles: \nTo provide a platform through which BIPOC (Black\, Indigenous\, People of Color) artists can be seen\, heard\, and paid. The arts are a right and not a privilege\, thus we work to remove cost\, geography\, and perception barriers to every performance. Every performance is an opportunity to build belonging\, empathy\, and community for all.

SUMMARY:I Am Little Haiti Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Every day another media outlet comes into Miami’s Little Haiti to unlock the secrets of “gentrification”: the shrinking radius of the neighborhood; the corrupt politicians homing in on monies meant to sustain community; the buildings knocked down; the empty lots; the sounds of yesteryear fading away\, and so on. Some ask: “where is Little Haiti?” or “does it go beyond a few blocks radius?” or “do Haitian folks still reside here?”. \n \nThis exhibition\, I Am Little Haiti\, curated by Carl-Philippe Juste and Rebecca Friedman\, PHD\, is the fifth chapter in a multiple-year project by Florida International University’s Commons for Justice: Race\, Risk\, Resilience project\, led by the Extreme Events Institute. As Carl Juste\, long-time resident\, photojournalist\, and exhibition curator explains: “Little Haiti cannot be erased. It is not that fragile. Now\, more than ever\, given the tentative nature of our democracy\, it is the time to be brave\, to embrace what is and to celebrate it. I am Little Haiti and I invite you to join me.” \n \nI Am Little Haiti – on view at Green Space Miami from May 11-August 10\, 2024 – imagines the beauty and depth of Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood and community across time and through space with layered\, multi-vocal and multidisciplinary storytelling. And ultimately\, by forging this connection between the Little Haiti on the gallery walls and the narratives of those who walk through and see\, we all become part of the story.

SUMMARY:Under A Simple Tree Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Immerse yourself in the thought-provoking “Under a Simple Tree: The Canopy Policy Project\,” presented by Hampton Art Lovers at Green Space Miami on Friday\, April 26 from 6 to 9 PM. This opening reception will celebrate artist Brandon Clarke’s exploration of art’s role in public policy and nature\, particularly the vital yet often overlooked tree canopies in working-class neighborhoods. Coinciding with National Arbor Day\, the event promises engaging art that intertwines with the local landscape and socio-economic narratives of Miami-Dade. The exhibition\, a tapestry of community stories and a call to action\, is a pivotal conversation starter on the environmental challenges and socio-economic disparities amplified by climate change. Don’t miss this blend of culture\, advocacy\, and community engagement\, sponsored by FIU’s Wolfsonian – Public Humanities Lab & Commons for Justice\, as we document the journey through oral histories and a documentary film in the making.

SUMMARY:Knit Does Not Equal Sweater Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Karelle Levy\n‘KNIT ≠ SWEATER’\n(Knit Does Not Equal Sweater) \n  \n“KNIT ≠ SWEATER” recognizes the challenges faced by fiber artists\, whose artistic medium is overlooked and undervalued since it is often grouped with craft. Because Levy is both a fiber artist and knitwear designer\, the show also honors the same stitches that connect her disciplines into a singular vision for an immersive\, interactive\, engaging experience. \n  \nKarelle Levy is a Paris-born\, Miami-based artist and knitwear designer whose work blurs the boundaries between traditional craft\, contemporary art\, and avant-garde fashion. She received a B.A. in Textile Design from the Rhode Island School of Design. Recent exhibitions include “World Textile Art Biennial” (2022)\, “BluPrint” (2023)\, “Global South Movement” (2023) and “Hallelujah! Salon de Refuse Show” (2023). She has been named a 2022 Knight Arts Champion by the Knight Foundation\, received a Miami-Dade artist grant\, inclusion in the city of Miami Beach’s 2020 “No Vacancy” art competition as well as the 2005\, 2010 and 2022 award for “Best Women’s Wear Fashion Designer” by Miami New Times.

SUMMARY:WOPHA Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Women Photographers International Archive (WOPHA) is pleased to announce receipt of a $30\,000 award from The Green Family Foundation Trust (GFF) to launch the WOPHA Research Fellowship and other projects taking place during its 2023 partnership cycle. \n  \nWOPHA is a non-profit organization founded by art historian and curator Aldeide Delgado to research\, promote\, support\, and educate about the role of photographers who identify as women and non-binary.  The organization is currently documenting the diverse artistic production of Latin American and Latinx communities\, including photographers from Mexico\, Central and South America\, the Caribbean\, and artists of Latin American descent living and working in the United States. \n  \nThe WOPHA Research Fellowship\, made possible with leading support from the Green Family Foundation Trust\, supports one exemplary research initiative by candidates such as scholars\, curators\, and artists\, to be shared with the public through exhibitions and forums. The program funds the digital publication of innovative scholarship on women photographers from underrepresented communities.  \n  \n“WOPHA welcomes this opportunity to support emerging scholars through its first Research Fellowship program. This work will surely take root in the community and add vibrant scholarship that is produced by a roster of next-generation curators and art-historians\,” states WOPHA founder and president Aldeide Delgado. \n  \nThe partnership with GFF allows the launch of WOPHA’s upcoming exhibition\, Welcome To My Volcano: WOPHA Artists in Residence\, at Green Space Miami\, 7200 Biscayne Boulevard\, from June 22 – August 20\, 2023. Highlighting works by WOPHA’s first group of artists-in-residence\, the show features photographers Amanda Bradley\, Adama Delphine Fawundu\, and Nadia Huggins. \n  \nThe GFF funds support two additional initiatives: Braiding Roots\, a community impact project that invites a woman photographer to document\, through a photo essay\, the world of the Miami braiding industry. The other is the furthering of the digitization efforts of the Archive. \n  \nAbout the Partnership \nGreen Space Miami is the Green Family Foundation’s art space. Guided by the Foundation’s principles of inclusion\, community empowerment and education\, Green Space Miami centers marginalized stories at the intersections of lived experience\, hosted in a space for dialogue. The mission of Green Space Miami is to be a catalyst for action around critical social issues\, collaborating with community partners and educational institutions. \n  \nWOPHA’s work with the Green Family Foundation Trust began in 2021\, when WOPHA launched the inaugural exhibition Female In Focus in collaboration with 1854 Media & British Journal of Photography at Green Space Miami. It was part of a series of city-wide photography programs held in tandem with the 2021 WOPHA Congress. Further support from the Trust was received in 2022 for the exhibition\, Strange Territory\, at the Betsy Hotel. \n  \nFor more information about Women Photographers International Archive (WOPHA)\, visit WOPHA.org  \n  \nWomen Photographers International Archive 2023 programs are made possible with leading support from the Green Family Foundation Trust. \n  \nWOPHA operates with support from its dedicated board of directors and community partners.
