SUMMARY:O\, Miami Greenhouse Closing Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The O\, Miami Greenhouse is a Green Family Foundation funded guided self-study program for South Florida creatives of all disciplines aged 18 – 25. The program is open to individuals regardless of intersectionality. Through one-on-one mentorship\, professional development\, and access to Miami artists and arts spaces\, the Greenhouse program cultivates the skills and projects of budding Miami creatives across artistic disciplines as each develops a personal artistic project over the course of the program. The Greenhouse Closing Celebration gathers the larger Greenhouse community — mentors\, alums\, and the special guests of the cohort — to witness Greenhouse creatives’ presentation of the projects they’ve developed all summer. \n  \nO\, Miami celebrates South Florida through the empathy-building power of poetry. We educate and engage communities by hosting programs and providing resources for people to identify and express themselves through poetry. We then publish that poetry in public spaces and in books. Our work invests in collaborative narratives of place\, to create a more equitable future. Year-round we operate as a publisher and education organization\, creating opportunities for people to come together through poetry and providing free resources for families and teachers. In April we celebrate the fruits of that work with our annual O\, Miami Poetry Festival.

SUMMARY:ICA Summer Portfolio Prep Workshop with Ashley Castaneda
DESCRIPTION:Tunnel Book Making – Narrative Overlay workshop by artist Ashley Castañeda in collaboration with The Institute of Contemporary Art’s Summer Portfolio Prep Program. \n  \nTunnel books have an interesting history dating back to the mid-18th century\, but how has this practice presented itself in contemporary art? Book-making as an artistic practice is not new\, but has manifested itself as a way of preserving oral records\, creating stories\, and serving multiple purposes. As an object\, books can act as the intersection of sculpture\, drawing\, painting\, and craftsmanship for those who participate in creating them and are the audience to them. \n  \nWith paper-cutting\, stories and narratives are navigable through direct and abstract ways. Working with silhouettes and 2D forms is the magic that makes tunnel books an interesting object to explore and interact with. Engaging with the sculptural and drawing components of bookmaking\, participants engaged in the conversation of creating books learning how to construct a tunnel book themselves.

SUMMARY:Risographs & Chemigrams — Working with Family Archives
DESCRIPTION:Risographs & Chemigrams — Working with Family Archives is an intergenerational workshop that will introduce the mediums of risograph printing and chemigrams to participants. Facilitated by Isabella Marie García\, this workshop invites participants to use their family archives as the foundation for the concrete and abstract image-making. Both mediums are key to the artist’s practice and present in her installation found on view in the Told\, Retold: The Pedagogy of Knowing & Becoming exhibition at Greenspace Miami. \n  \nRisograph printing is a digital printing technique that uses stencils to transfer ink to paper\, resulting in bold\ncolors\, tactile textures\, and perfect imperfections. Participants will learn about the history of risograph before practicing their own printing with a PrintGocco\, a popular at-home printing device produced by Japanese company Riso Kagaku starting in the late 1970s. Participants are encouraged to bring their own family photographs that they would like to print\, while also being provided archival familial images sourced from the Miami-Dade Public Library System. \n  \nChemigrams are created by forcing a chemical reaction between photographic paper and a resist — typically a form of varnish or liquid i.e. oil\, honey\, sugar\, etc. — and utilizing traditional darkroom chemistry to create an experimental visual result. Participants will learn the history and basics of this experimental photo technique before creating their own results with photo paper and resists provided by the facilitator. Participants will leave with concrete and abstract images sourced from personal and collective family archives. \n  \nThe workshop will serve to uphold the indisputable value of the tactile to intergenerational storytelling and material preservation as living testaments of familial lore.

SUMMARY:Florida's Emancipation Legacy – The Juneteenth Experience Kickoff Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The Juneteenth Experience 2025 by Hued Songs commemorates Florida’s official Emancipation Day with a special celebration on Monday\, May 20th. This event serves as the Miami-Dade kickoff for this year’s Juneteenth Experience\, centered on the theme of non-erasure and the celebration of Black Miami-Dade history. \n  \nThe evening opens with a reception featuring wine\, light bites\, and creative place making activities designed to connect participants with local history. These interactive experiences include community and family portraits with artist Symone Major\, a symbolic “Sowing Seeds of History” planting activity\, and collective poetry making facilitated by Yadira Capaz. From 7:00 – 8:30 PM\, the program features a panel discussion titled “Truth Spoken\, Freedom Performed: Florida’s Emancipation Legacy” moderated by creative producer Arsimmer McCoy. The panel includes Coconut Grove resident & historian Carol Henley\, DJ and culture keeper Charles Farquaharson (known as Pac Jam 305)\, and Kamilah Pritchett Executive Director of The Black Archives. \n  \nTheir conversation will explore Miami-Dade’s rich Black history through personal narratives\, cultural preservation\, and community resilience. Performances by The Juneteenth Experience cast will complement and enhance the discussion themes throughout the evening. This celebration on Florida’s official Emancipation Day – commemorating May 20th\, 1865\, when enslaved people in Florida finally learned of their freedom – initiates a month of community workshops\, performances\, and activations across Miami-Dade County\, all leading up to the signature Juneteenth Experience performances in June. \n
