SUMMARY:WOPHA Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Women Photographers International Archive (WOPHA) is pleased to announce receipt of a $30\,000 award from The Green Family Foundation Trust (GFF) to launch the WOPHA Research Fellowship and other projects taking place during its 2023 partnership cycle. \n  \nWOPHA is a non-profit organization founded by art historian and curator Aldeide Delgado to research\, promote\, support\, and educate about the role of photographers who identify as women and non-binary.  The organization is currently documenting the diverse artistic production of Latin American and Latinx communities\, including photographers from Mexico\, Central and South America\, the Caribbean\, and artists of Latin American descent living and working in the United States. \n  \nThe WOPHA Research Fellowship\, made possible with leading support from the Green Family Foundation Trust\, supports one exemplary research initiative by candidates such as scholars\, curators\, and artists\, to be shared with the public through exhibitions and forums. The program funds the digital publication of innovative scholarship on women photographers from underrepresented communities.  \n  \n“WOPHA welcomes this opportunity to support emerging scholars through its first Research Fellowship program. This work will surely take root in the community and add vibrant scholarship that is produced by a roster of next-generation curators and art-historians\,” states WOPHA founder and president Aldeide Delgado. \n  \nThe partnership with GFF allows the launch of WOPHA’s upcoming exhibition\, Welcome To My Volcano: WOPHA Artists in Residence\, at Green Space Miami\, 7200 Biscayne Boulevard\, from June 22 – August 20\, 2023. Highlighting works by WOPHA’s first group of artists-in-residence\, the show features photographers Amanda Bradley\, Adama Delphine Fawundu\, and Nadia Huggins. \n  \nThe GFF funds support two additional initiatives: Braiding Roots\, a community impact project that invites a woman photographer to document\, through a photo essay\, the world of the Miami braiding industry. The other is the furthering of the digitization efforts of the Archive. \n  \nAbout the Partnership \nGreen Space Miami is the Green Family Foundation’s art space. Guided by the Foundation’s principles of inclusion\, community empowerment and education\, Green Space Miami centers marginalized stories at the intersections of lived experience\, hosted in a space for dialogue. The mission of Green Space Miami is to be a catalyst for action around critical social issues\, collaborating with community partners and educational institutions. \n  \nWOPHA’s work with the Green Family Foundation Trust began in 2021\, when WOPHA launched the inaugural exhibition Female In Focus in collaboration with 1854 Media & British Journal of Photography at Green Space Miami. It was part of a series of city-wide photography programs held in tandem with the 2021 WOPHA Congress. Further support from the Trust was received in 2022 for the exhibition\, Strange Territory\, at the Betsy Hotel. \n  \nFor more information about Women Photographers International Archive (WOPHA)\, visit WOPHA.org  \n  \nWomen Photographers International Archive 2023 programs are made possible with leading support from the Green Family Foundation Trust. \n  \nWOPHA operates with support from its dedicated board of directors and community partners. SUMMARY:Shneider Hillaire: Rituals and Ceremonies Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Shneider Léon Hilaire\, “Rituals and Ceremonies”\nthe first exhibition of the artist’s work outside of Haiti \n  \nGreen Space Miami and Axelle Liautaud host an opening reception: Thursday\, May 11th\, 2023 5-8 pm \n  \n“The collective imagination of the Haitian population is where I find my inspiration – particularly in the beliefs\, myths\, and traditions that I find very rich and that need to be shared and preserved.” Shneider Léon Hilaire \n  \nThe body of work presented in Rituals and Ceremonies was produced between 2021 and 2023 at a time of a collective existential crisis in Haiti and more precisely in Port-au-Prince\, where Shneider lives. The inspiration for these works reflects the needs of people living in Haiti today\, while faced with threatening situations daily\, to find meaning in healing and traditional rituals and beliefs. Hilaire’s paintings reveal a great deal of knowledge of these traditions uncommon to find in someone of his generation. Shneider’s work is shrouded in a veil that conveys images of a world where a separation between the living and the dead does not exist and where miracles are still possible. This exhibition was Shneider’s first show outside of Haiti and features a collection of artifacts from Vodou temples. The show was curated by Axelle Liautaud. \n  \nSchneider Léon Hilaire (b. 1990) is a Haitian artist based in Port-au-Prince. He began teaching himself the rudiments of drawing by reproducing cartoon characters at an early age\, and later sharpened his sense of observation and reflection by making self-portraits. As Hilaire began to receive commissions\, he decided to focus on portraiture. He became committed to art-making and familiarized himself with the techniques of realistic painting. In 2016\, he registered at Le Centre d’Art de Port-au-Prince\, where he developed his style and visual language with the training of internationally renowned artists\, such as Mario Benjamin\, Marie Hélène Cauvin\, and Frantz Zéphirin. \n  \nLibations for La Siren 40”x50” \n  \nHealing Power of the Sea II 40”x50” \n  \nCeremony for Agwé 40”x50” \n  \nAll paintings acrylic on canvas

SUMMARY:ChromaTone: Voices from Miami Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:The history of the Coppertone sign is storied. The artist\, Joyce Ballentyne Brand\, built her career in a pin-up art field dominated by men. She beat out male artists to design calendars\, often using her own image as the model\, contributing to her empowerment of self and other women. Yet the billboard also lived on as a reminder of Miami’s racist and xenophobic laws. When it was first erected\, the sign stood tall above neighborhoods it did not represent\, promoting a beach prohibited to many. Miami has been transformed since then\, drastic societal and political change accelerating the city’s growth into the most diverse metro area in the country\, enabling more inclusivity and empowering more voices. \n  \nWith 2022’s open call\, Green Space Miami aspired to raise the voices of local artists\, asking them to reimagine and share their personal take on this historic and universally recognized image. Through their work we experience a glimpse of what the Coppertone sign represents to them and their community\, in their voice and visual language. \n  \nThe artists you’ll be hearing from are: \nLauren Baccus\nMorel Doucet\nDiana Eusebio\nLyzbeth Lara and Prem Lorenzen\nCoralina Rodriguez Meyer\nNicolle Nyariri\, Stefanie Paredes\, and Daniella Silvera\nLauren Shapiro\nCornelius Tulloch\nArsimmer McCoy and Passion Ward\nDiego Waisman

SUMMARY:Tama
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 15\, 2022\n3:30pm – 5:30pm\n  \nTama is a performance piece by artist Yacine Tilala Fall in collaboration with Elijah Rose Williamson. The Wolof tama is an hourglass-shaped talking drum from Senegal\, made by the Wolof and Serer people. Its sound mimics human speech and it’s most often played by griots\, West African storytellers and oral historians. Inspired by the form and functionality of the drum\, this performance consists of a head form worn by two participants that will speak through touch. This work investigates the gesture of sound. \n  \nInfluenced by Fall’s Senegalese and Mauritanian American heritage\, Tama is indicative of the artist ‘s body of work that uses natural materials and the human form to investigate the concepts of heritage\, ritual\, and function.
