SUMMARY:ChromaTone: Voices from Miami Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:The history of the Coppertone sign is storied. The artist\, Joyce Ballentyne Brand\, built her career in a pin-up art field dominated by men. She beat out male artists to design calendars\, often using her own image as the model\, contributing to her empowerment of self and other women. Yet the billboard also lived on as a reminder of Miami’s racist and xenophobic laws. When it was first erected\, the sign stood tall above neighborhoods it did not represent\, promoting a beach prohibited to many. Miami has been transformed since then\, drastic societal and political change accelerating the city’s growth into the most diverse metro area in the country\, enabling more inclusivity and empowering more voices. \n  \nWith 2022’s open call\, Green Space Miami aspired to raise the voices of local artists\, asking them to reimagine and share their personal take on this historic and universally recognized image. SUMMARY:Tama
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 15\, 2022\n3:30pm – 5:30pm\n  \nTama is a performance piece by artist Yacine Tilala Fall in collaboration with Elijah Rose Williamson. The Wolof tama is an hourglass-shaped talking drum from Senegal\, made by the Wolof and Serer people. Its sound mimics human speech and it’s most often played by griots\, West African storytellers and oral historians. Inspired by the form and functionality of the drum\, this performance consists of a head form worn by two participants that will speak through touch. This work investigates the gesture of sound. \n  \nInfluenced by Fall’s Senegalese and Mauritanian American heritage\, Tama is indicative of the artist ‘s body of work that uses natural materials and the human form to investigate the concepts of heritage\, ritual\, and function.

DESCRIPTION:On May 13th 2022\, we hosted Human Rights Watch and briefed community leaders on the Repression of Cuban Artists. The conversation was led by curator Carolina Barrero and Human Rights Watch advocate and researcher Juan Pappier about their experiences\, what’s happening now\, and what the art community can do to help. \n\n\nWe discussed how the Cuban government has systematically targeted Cuban artists\, including\, more recently\, those who participated in the July 11 protests. Several dozen have reportedly been arrested\, detained\, or placed under house arrest. Some remain in detention and face criminal charges while others have been forced to exile.

Join us in this pertinent conversation as we discuss how art has aided us in surpassing pain and memorializing the power\, joy\, and community building found in the work of Black women in America. Its purpose is to discover\, promote and reward exceptional women and non-binary photographers all over the world. \n  \nWe [WOPHA] are honored to co-present this exhibition as part of the celebration of the world’s first-ever WOPHA Congress.
