SUMMARY:Hampton Art Lovers Presents: The Summit of Shade (Shady Summit)
DESCRIPTION:This summit brings together thought leaders and advocates for improved shade for low-income communities in South Florida. Policymakers\, neighborhood associations\, and residents will participate in workshops to build consensus and solutions for increasing tree canopy in African-American neighborhoods and other working-class communities. \n  \nWhen the intensity of the pounding Miami sun becomes unbearable\, the shade of a large tree can be an oasis of comfort–if there is a tree to be found in the neighborhood. Beyond comfort\,trees protect our air\, contribute to our health\, and act as historic community markers. The tree as protector and symbol for what keeps us rooted is the subject of our community summit but inspired by our art exhibit entitled\, “Under a Simple Tree: The Canopy Policy Project\,” presented by Hampton Art Lovers at Green Space Miami. \n  \nEvent Agenda: \n10:00 AM-12:30 PM \nPre-Event with Sustain the Culture and Conflict Kitchen \n1:45 PM-2:00 PM \nThe Inspiration for the Summit with Christopher Norwood\, J.D. \n2:00 PM-2:45 PM \nTeach the Truth Garden-Overtown Urban Gardening with Dr. Marvin Dunn\, Professor Emeritus\, Department of Psychology at Florida International University Lessons from an expert in urban gardening. \n3:00 PM-3:45 PM \nGeo Agriculture with Richard Campbell Lessons from an expert in growing trees\, fruit\, and vegetables from rocks. \n4:00 PM-4:45 PM \nThe Everglades-America’s Tropical Wilderness with Rev. According to the non-profit American Forests\,trees reduce heat-related illnesses and even lower utility costs\, improving quality of life. But inmany low-income neighborhoods the lack of trees worsens the already high levels of heat and pollution. The latest exhibit from Hampton Art Lovers showcasing the work of local artist Brandon Clarke at Green Space Miami\, is exploring the environmental and social implications of tree canopy disparities through art and conversation while celebrating the beauty of nature—The Canopy Policy Project presented and curated by Hampton Art Lovers does not end with this show and summit. It’s just beginning. We’ve collected oral histories and documented the stories to produce a documentary film that will live on and continue to advocate for more shade in African American communities. \n  \nSpeaker Karly Pulido-Sustainability in Miami-Dade Public Schools \nKarly Pulido is the inaugural Sustainability Officer at Miami-Dade County Public Schools\, where she spearheads sustainability strategies for the 3rd largest school district in the United States. With a Bachelor of Science in Sustainability and the Built Environment from the University of Florida and a Master’s of Engineering from The University of Wisconsin-Madison Karly’sjourney in sustainability has been diverse to say the least! Her career includes pivotal roles at Legacy Vacation Resorts\, where she was instrumental in achieving B-Corp certification\, serving in the Peace Corps Uganda\, and at Orange County Public Schools\, where she managed the Sustainability Office. Karly’s comprehensive experience encompasses working with not-for-profits\, implementing robust sustainability strategies\, and fostering environmental justice. Herwork is driven by a deep commitment to improving community livelihoods and advocating for climate action across public and private sectors.
