Books Unbanned

Join us for a full day of readings, conversation, and community engagement centered on Black literature and creative practice.
The Book Sessions Line Up includes:
– A children’s book reading session
– Phillip Norville & his father of Lando Golds, for a Mouth Full of Golds talk moderated by Aaron Jackson.
– A lecture by Heaven Jones Collection Plate: Black Mourning in Public Memory
– #PhotoTalk305 a follow up of a #Photowalk305 day down 79th Street – The area that inspired the artwork. Shayla Marshall will be exploring her installation practice with book Black Quantum Futurism and displaying photographs of participants from the event.
Throughout the day, local organizations will host informational tables, offering resources and opportunities for deeper communal engagement.
We are proud to partner with The Roots Books and Market, a Black-owned independent bookstore in Liberty City that serves as a vital third space for connection, culture, and resistance to book bans. We will be accepting monetary and book donations which 100% goes to supporting Roots!
All books are accepted, but bring books specifically by Black Authors and you get a little keepsake gift to take from the artists.
Heaven, Phillip, and Shayla’s work is on view as part of the group show New Atlantis.
