Pamela “Longsword” Largaespada is a Nicaraguan-American creative from Miami, FL.
She is passionate about Latinx representation in the arts and anything unapologetically feminist. She is a 2020 Sundance Short Film Intensive Fellow & a Sundance Institute Knight Alumni grantee with the project, “Guerrillera”, an intimate short film featuring a mothering sex worker dealing with the psychological trauma of loss, currently in pre-production. She is Head of Film in the Climate Crusader League, an environmentalist group merging science, tech and art, lead by Alexander Zastera. Largaespada’s work has been featured in MOCA North Miami, Telemundo, Filmmaker Magazine, Miami New Times, NBC6, WLRN, Miami Herald, ArtBurst and film festivals from Miami to Shanghai.
Pamela Largaespada was selected for her work, “Kairi During COVID,” a documentary-style art film that captures the birth of her baby and postpartum experience in the new COVID-19 world. “This was the most scariest and proudest moment of my life. The weight of motherhood anxiety with the pandemic blues was a whirlwind to go through. My most vulnerable and raw video.”
The micro-short film explores the female body during labor and postpartum, capturing an already-intense experience in turbulent times. “I gave birth in one of the hottest COVID hotspots in the nation,” Largaespada says. “For safety reasons, I was afraid of at-home birth and birthing centers, in case anything were to go wrong. I [ended up having] an emergency C-section due to complications from induced labor.”
Viewers of the film also watch a man discover fatherhood for the first time. “While editing, I discovered footage that my partner, Thiago, had kept recording without my knowledge, which was a sweet surprise. I do not see many depictions of positive POC father figures in short films, so this video is partially an ode to my partner and… my new little family.”
